My MPs expenses ideas

February 6, 2012 Leave a comment

So, I am sure we all agree, the amount MPs claim in expenses is stupid.

So here are a few ideas I have, that will cut down the costs, to benefit the tax payer.

  • No second homes claims, they are not needed. Parliament should own a big block of bedsits close to Parliament, you get a bedsit with your role as MP. Also, this block will have a canteen serving 3 meals a day. This would also create jobs, because this block would need cleaning aswell as people to run the canteen. This would also eliminate the need to waste money on fancy furniture, special toilet seats etc.
  • No first class travel tickets, if “second class” seats are good enough for the everyday man, they are good enough for the MPs that represent the everyday man.
  • They would be banned from putting lunches on expenses, why should the tax payer pay for their lunch or dinner? Taxes are not their private expenses account & should not be footing the bill. Many of us have to provide our own lunch at work, so should MPs.

A night I was looking forward to, turned uncomfortable

November 21, 2011 Leave a comment

Tonight I met up with William, we were going to the Junction to see the Naked & Famous.

Now, this is only a small venue, so they have no designated disabled area, so you just have to pick a spot and go with it. Because we were both in our electric chairs, we went right for the front, so we could get good views, this proved to be a good choice, at the beginning.

The support act came on an hour later, the view was good, no problems, just like every time we go there. But when the main act came on, many behind us started pushing around, surging forwards. We kept getting pushed into too, it was quite weird to start with. Then it got more and more aggressive, this one bloke kept standing on the back of our chairs, it was really worrying for us, we were raised up, chairs swaying, not good. I decided to lower my seat, then Will followed.

Security came to us, told us to give them a nod if the bloke kept standing on our chairs. 5 minutes later, I gave the nod, he kept doing it, he was also pushing others. I think he was chucked out at the same time as a large group, this large group were also responsible for holding up the whole show. Half hour in, as one song finished, they started chanting a sexist comment, so the band asked them to stop and said they wouldn’t play until they had gone. So there was a10 minute delay and they all left, band returned, fun evening in the end.

Got a guitar pick and the end too, as did William. No one the crew with the band noted how we “got beat up” and said we deserved them, I admit, we took a few blows to the back and head, ouch.

(don’t read anything into the post title, couldn’t think of anything else)

Had a good weekend, drove over 200 miles. Went to help at a disabled sports club for kids on Saturday, that was good, hope to go again next month. In the evening, Dad took us into Cambridge to meet William, we went for dinner at Strada then went to see Omid Djalili, great evening. On Sunday I went into town (Cambridge), bought a few things (socks). After that, went to Boccia, I was crap, but still learning.

Thank you for reading.

A day of ups and downs

November 2, 2011 Leave a comment

Today started badly for me. When I got to work, went to the department as normal, went to leave when needed to about half hour later and noticed a problem. The site managers had fitted the new platform, so I could get out of the building, something which was an issue since having that pin fitted to my chair. On my way out, pleased the platform had been fitted, I hit a problem, on my way out, I hit the pin on the lip of the door, the platform was not high enough.

The pin had been bent a little, big problem. I went out to the car, to see if I could still dock with the car. I could, but when I switched the engine on, the alarm went off that says my chair is not connected.

Basically the next hour was spent me raging that work had let me down, how they didn’t value me or respect my needs. I went to one of the deputy heads, told her of my problem, she said go get my chair fixed, I could leave work until it was sorted. I called Chris Elliot, asked if they thought they could sort it, they said yes, bring the chair to them asap. So I went to Peterborough, where the pin was put back into place. But it is a once only fix, they can not do such a fix again, it weakens the pin if you keep bending it, next time it will need replacing.

So when I got back to work, it was agreed I would not go back to my department until access has been sorted. To me it feels like I’m being punished for having a disability, I gave them a months warning of this change, I was told they were more than happy to sort access.

On a lighter note, the car is great. Except for the fact the fuel indicator doesn’t work, says I’m empty after 150-180 miles. The tank can hold 66litres, 180 miles is only 20 litres, so I have to guess when I will run out, fun!

Almost there

October 25, 2011 1 comment

Tomorrow is the big day, the day where my car is finally delivered to me, or so I hope/believe, things could go wrong. I am very excited, hope Chris Elliot Adaptions don’t let me down. They are meant to be here around 11am, as I have said, I am very excited.

When I get the car, can’t drive it straight away, won’t be insured for an hour or so. This is because, normally, you go collect the car, once there, you enter a code Motability give you, which acts as your signature. Instead, when the car is brought here, I give Chris Elliot the code, they enter it when they return to their office.

I think this is a good thing that I can not drive it straight away, gives me time to calm down a bit. Also gives me time to get used to what is in the car etc, put the stuff I want inside it.

Sadly today has gone very slowly, not been out today, which means I have spent long periods of today, wishing the time away.

Yesterday was good, went into Cambridge with Emily, first time I have been in her car. We had Japanese for lunch, was good, other than that, I spent no money.

On Saturday we met up with William, we went to the Corn Exchange to see Reginald D Hunter, was alright, but had heard some of the stuff before.

Hope, positive thinking, negative thinking, celebrating

October 20, 2011 4 comments

Afternoon readers, only one more day of work before a week off work (Half term). This past week has been normal, a bit dull. I called Chris Elliot adaptions on Monday, they told me the car would be ready on Tuesday once the power steering had been lightened. I called on Tuesday evening, they said there had been an issue, it had not been done, they said they would all me when it was done. Now, this left me worried, because i really wanted it done early on in the week, the earlier it is completed, the earlier I get it next week.

I didn’t call them yesterday, I didn’t call them today, no, infact, today I came home to a message. The message left with my mum said, the car is ready, they will bring it round next Wednesday, 11am. I am over the moon, very happy, not buzzing yet, because there are still 5 and a bit days to wait, but I am very happy I can tell you.

When I get the car, won’t drive it straight away, don’t think I can for an hour or 2, won’t be insured until Chris Elliot get back and enter something onto the computer. I will get used to the “cockpit”, transferring etc, trying to calm down, you know, the norm. :D

I want to thank you all for putting up with me going on and on about the car, about me moaning etc, I’m just sorry happy.

Playing, good times

October 16, 2011 4 comments

Been a few days, trying to get back into the swing of blogging. I’ve mostly been watching, Cricket, Footy, Rugby and of course F1, will be watching NFL tonight, GO PATRIOTS! I don’t support them, but Broncos have a bye week, so will cheer on someone else.

I have my chair back, the pin is under the battery, I am worried it will catch, will just have to take things carefully for a while, adapt routes etc. I am mainly worried about getting into the department at work, there is a lip, might catch, will have to get the front wheels over then creep forwards to see if it catches. One trouble we noticed when we got the chair back was, to get the pin fitted, they had to lift the front battery, so the back casing was lifted, meaning my riser didn’t sit right. We have sorted that now though, even if dad did accidentally remove a sensor , one that limits the speed when raised up, all fixed now though.

Work is still being done on the car, still no end date been given, not worried now though, I feel good.

I have also been filming and taking pictures of the moon, I like the results, do you?

Pffft

I have not been upto much, mostly work, bit of photography. I saw Stephen Merchant live a few weeks ago, he was really funny.

I am currently without my electric wheelchair, it is with Chris Elliot, the people who fit the hand controls to my car, aswell as making it so my chair can safely be transported in the car. They took it off my on Tuesday, I hope to have it back in time for the weekend. While I was there, had a go at transferring again, it went very smoothly, it felt good. I also got to turn the car on, rev it up, felt very real, I loved it. I don’t have a date of when I will get it yet, but I think we are on the home straight, it can’t be much longer now.

I have also booked tickets to see a few things, Death Cab for Cutie in Birmingham, Penn & Teller at the o2 Indigo room and Sir Paul McCartney at the o2 Arena.

The one in Birmingham is first, I have booked a room in a Premier in for that, as it is Friday night, means I can have a few drinks, then have a day out in the city on the Saturday. The only thing I have to worry about is the fact the hotel has no car park, which means I need to find one, I think i have, 4 minutes walk away. But it will be dark, cold, I will be carrying a bag and chair charger. I’m sure I will be fine, it just makes me feel a little uneasy. I also hope to meet a few of my Brum twitter followers, if they wish to meet me ;) . If anyone would like to come see this band with me, I have a free carer ticket, please contact me, I would love some company.
